Although the Shrine label from Washington, DC is revered by Northern soul fans, apart from honourable exceptions like J D Bryant, Jimmy Armstrong and Leroy Taylor, too many of the 45s are more pop than soul to me. Another one that doesn’t fit the usual mould is this hard hitting track by Shirley Edwards. Her vocal exudes authority and power here, and the big arrangement and production by Dale Warren and Harry Bass make a great backdrop for her. This was to be Shirley’s only single, although Warren did get her some background vocal work at Stax, but with her talent she deserved many more chances at stardom.
