This melodic ballad was recorded at the time when doo wop was being incorporated into the newer soul idiom – and I really like the way it includes the best of both those musical worlds. The background harmonies and pumping piano are pure doo wop – just the things that make this a favourite with vocal group freaks, while Alexander’s beautifully modulated lead holds enough gospel passion for any soul enthusiast.
The widely recognised name of Robert (Bob) Scherman as writer / producer makes it very likely that this is a West Coast disc – as indeed the label’s design and font also imply the same location.
