This New York recording has slipped so far below the radar that it has disappeared. But I am pleased to give it a little push into the limelight as it well deserves it. It’s Been A Long Time is a deep soul ballad in the grand manner – climbing horns, a lovely bluesy guitar and the classic 12/8 time. Above all this Perry tells his tale carefully and with several fine gospel inflections.

If only Sonny Perry had recorded more tracks like this beauty.
