Doris Badie's career has been intertwined with those of Sam Mosely and Bob Johnson. She was one of the featured singers with their Sam & Bob and the Soulman revue which was based in New Albany, MS. She sang lead on two of the numbers on their legendary Mississippi Mud (Sabo) album, both of them from her own pen. The lively Why Is Leaving You is a very catchy mid paced number full of charm. I like the gentle ballad Since You Been Gone very much as well – the downward chord changes give the song a nice "blue" feel and Doris is suitably heartbroken.
In the mid 70s M & J renamed their group as Mojoba (MOsely JOhnson BAnd – or is it "BAdie"?) but sadly Doris only appeared audibly on one of the four Mojoba tracks that were issued – I Know.
Instead she did appear under her own name reprising Why Is Leaving You coupled with a fine version of Denise LaSalle’s assertive mid paced I Get What I Want. This Polydor 45 was produced in Memphis by Jim Ed Norman for Soultastic Productions whose Rick Taylor had been involved in Denise’s sessions for the Second Breath album the previous year which included her original take on the song. Judging by the Polydor release numbers Doris' tracks were cut while all the members of Mojoba were in the studio, and you can hear Sam & Bob behind her doing the background vocals.
Sadly that session seems to have been Doris' last time in a studio.
