This obscurity is one of those tracks that bridge the gap between R & B and soul, with the arrangement sticking to the former while the lead vocals and the harmony singers bring some tasteful gospel influences to the proceedings. I like the strength of this side a lot, and the way the interplay between the guitar, organ and horns works. Judging by the flip which refers to the Popeye dance craze, this 45 should be dated as 1961 or 1962. But as to who Mr B might be or where this came from is a mystery. As indeed is the name of the label.
Davie Gordon subsequently wrote in with the following info: "going by the matrix number it's from c. July 1965. I think it's from Georgia, the only other credit I have in my database for Skillmill Music is a single by The Malibus on P.J. 1004 which was a Macon-based label." I'm grateful to him as always.
