Dayton, OH bandleader Big Jay Bush had a couple of 45s released, both of them featuring strong vocalists who, I guess, must have fronted the band on their gigs. The Vangee features a storming James Brown There Was A Time styled track called Funky Horns which I like a lot. The singer with the great sense of timing on the track was Nelson Calloway who I sadly don’t know at all. Not that I know anything about the guy who sings such a great lead on the super blues ballad Come On Home Baby, Tommy Gaddis either. I just love this kind of sound – and I could listen to it all day. Nicely riffing saxes, tasteful lead guitar and a singer who puts his heart and soul into it. What more could you ask for? Redbug was one of many labels owned by Gene Redd.
