Sir Shambling's Deep Soul Heaven

New Orleans singer Daisy Burris is best known for the Northern soul favourite Four Strong Winds, but of the quartet of tracks she had out it’s my least favourite. Her first 45 emerged on Port and it coupled a typically infectious Louisiana toe tapper Take The Same Thing, featuring some great horns (Wardell??) and piano (Toussaint??) with a plaintive ballad I’ve Learned My Lesson. This track is well suited to her rather “little girl” tone, and her fine gospel inflections and emotional pain raise it well out if the pack. No doubt this got to Port via Marshall Seahorn’s New York connections, particularly Bobby Robinson.

The top side to Four Strong Winds is the best thing Daisy did. In Love To Stay is a lovely Allen Toussaint ballad based on super chord changes, and his own arrangement is faultless – just listen to those tom tom rumbles from the drummer, those subdued horns and the arpeggio guitar. And on top of this there’s Daisy demanding a commitment from her man, with such hope and fear in her voice. So simple and yet so very very effective. The rarest Deesu release?
