Sir Shambling's Deep Soul Heaven

Bill Brantley was the “Titus” half of Van & Titus before he went solo for a couple of fine southern 45s for John Richbourg. All four of the sides were recorded in Nashville, and for the late 70s this was about as close to country soul as music got. The first single had the delicate ballad A Little Bit More on one side, just the wrong side of the country line for me, and the splendid Love’s Sweet Vibration, which has had some plays from the more enlightened DJs, on the other. This side was a perfect vehicle for Bill’s lovely high tenor vocals, the double tracking works well, and the melody is a real grower.

Grandaddy (Loves To Share)” was a country soul toe tapper of some charm, and the flip is well worth hearing too. It’s You Baby (You’re What Makes The World Go Round) is pretty much the last word in that mixture of country and soul – just check out those lovely guitar figures straight from “Rainy Night In Georgia”. The way Brantley coarsens his tone towards the end rap is lovely too.
