Mississippi’s Vimla label had some really strong releases by Edna Echols, Gary Wicks and Samuel T Robinson, but this one by Willie Boyd may well be the best. Just listen to the way his gruff tones make I Could Be Happy a minor deep soul masterpiece. The churchy organ holds the song together, the solo blues guitarist is fine too as are the subdued horn section. This 45, which only seems to exist as a double sider, is very rare and is only now starting to become acknowledged by deep devotees.
